Mike
Langham and Colin Wells are well known local historians in Buxton
having published ten books between them on aspects of the history
of the town. They may often be found walking in the Peak District
or researching and photographing Buxton Spa's rich history but both
authors believe in proper relaxation and they may be consulted in
the Baker's Arms in West Road, usually on a Tuesday evening!
COLIN WELLS was born in Buxton and has lived in the
town all his life. Apart from an interest in local history he shares,
with his wife Dorothy, an interest in theatre and the arts. They have
both been known to 'tread the boards' in amateur drama and musicals
at Buxton's Opera House. Walking in the Peak District takes up much
of his weekends when he is not on-call for the local hospital where
he has worked for the last twenty-five years, latterly as superintendent
radiographer. Colin and Dorothy have a son and daughter and three
grand children.
MIKE LANGHAM was born and brought up in a small village
in South Nottinghamshire. He has spent his entire career in the field
of education and training, working in industry, management consultancy
and the civil service. He moved to Buxton twenty-five years ago and
his family quickly settled in the town.
Mike's latent interest in history was enlivened when he collaborated
with Colin Wells in writing a short history of the town. Since that
time the partnership has produced a number of publications, including
a very successful biography published by the Derbyshire Library Service.
Encouraged by this work, Mike undertook a research degree with the
University of Sheffield and Buxton - A People's History is
the outcome of his studies.
Dr Mike Langham is retired and divides his time between voluntary
work, historical research and writing, and as a non-executive director
of the Derbyshire Mental Health Services NHS Trust. He is married
to Barbara and they have two sons and three grandchildren.
